Putting Books Into The Hands of Children Who Need Them: Books2Connect

Our Mission
Books2Connect promotes literacy and enhances self esteem by expanding the horizons of young readers through the gift of books. Books2Connect seeks new and gently used books to distribute to children from infancy through young adulthood, in an effort to build a foundation for life-long learning. Books2Connect collaborates with local community groups to collect books for organizations that serve families in need, offering children access to new worlds of information and opportunity.

Books2Connect seeks donations of children's books from individuals as well as through book drives run by organizations such as honor societies, sports teams, key clubs and other service organizations. Books2Connect is also a great project for individuals looking to fulfill community service requirements. Information containing the essential tools for running a successful book drive are available here and at the Book Drive Tab .

Although Connecticut is one of the wealthiest states in the country, nearly one out of ten children live in poverty. For many families in our State, books are a luxury item that parents cannot afford, and children who live near the poverty line have lower reading scores. According to the National Center for Family Literacy, children who lack early exposure to reading not only struggle in school but are at high risk of substance abuse, teen pregnancy and delinquency. Studies have shown that being read to as a child and having books in the home are the two most important indicators of academic success. A 2010 study entitled “Research in Social Stratification and Mobility” found that even in homes with 20 books, on average a child will complete two more years of education than a child growing up in a home with no books.
